Pool Associations & Why You Should Join One
The swimming pool industry has 2 national trade associations that offer memberships. IPSSA, the Independent Pool and Spa Service Association INC. and UPA, United Pool Association. Both of them offer memberships for pool service technicians. The main advantages of being part of an association are that they provide liability insurance at an affordable cost, route coverage, and meetings where you are able to meet other technicians. There are other Associations in the pool and spa industry that offer insurance without having to attend monthly meetings, and often do not offer route coverage.
Reasons why you should join:
- Liability insurance –Each chapter has insurance and are able to offer each member a policy for their business. In doing this they are able to provide insurance at a very low cost. They will cover damages to pool equipment, property, medical etc. If you have your own pool business one of the first things you should have in insurance. There have been many times that I have heard of guys emptying pools and having the water back up into the house. The cost of damages was in the thousands. You will sleep much better at night knowing that you are covered.
- Route Coverage –Each chapter has a certain amount of pool technicians and members are required to attend meetings each month. In doing this they are able to offer route coverage for each member in case of illness or accidents. If a member is not able to service their pools, due to an illness or accident, the other members will step in and service the pools for the member. Normally each chapter will designate the maximum number of pools and amount of time that they will service the pools.
- Monthly Meetings –Since they are required to meet once per month they are a great opportunity to meet other members. In those meetings, they will talk about new products, industry requirements, and training. It’s a great place to meet other members and learn from their knowledge and years of experience.
