I just bought a pool route!!! Now what?
I just bought a pool route. Now, what are my next steps?
Training Provided By The Owner – If you are new to the pool industry this is a MUST!! Make sure that they provide one on one training, and that you spend at least a month training. One or two weeks of training will not be enough to go over everything. In the first week, you will be overwhelmed by how much information there is to learn about servicing pools. Training should include, but not limited to, proper water chemistry, proper cleaning techniques, equipment functions, filters and filter cleanings. In most cases when purchasing a route if there are any repairs in the training period the seller and buyer will split any repairs that are performed. But talk to the seller about that and come to an agreement. Any hands-on experience that you can get during that time will be a big benefit to you.
The Transition of Business – Good pool guys take care of their customers and they are loyal to the business. An owner that is selling their route or part of the route will make sure that the transition goes smoothly, and will take the time to train you properly. It’s in their best interest to make sure it goes smooth. Ensure that a letter is written to each customer letting them know that you are taking over the business. If the customers don’t want to keep you servicing the pool the seller will need to replace the account or provide a refund for that account. Make sure you are transparent with the customers and let them know who you are and that you are taking over the business.
Your Professional Image – I can’t push this enough. The one thing that will make you stand out from the rest is a simple uniform. Wear a uniform that has a bright colored shirt that stands out, embroider it, and you will see how far that alone will go. It’s not a common practice in the industry and will be a huge benefit to you starting in the pool industry. Neighbors will start to recognize you and those that have pools will come to talk to you if they have problems with their pools. They will recognize you because you are always dressed the same. Put a sign on your truck with your company name and telephone number. People will recognize your truck and will call you. Its a great source of referrals with a low cost.
Marketing – Build a website. Nowadays you can build your own website online in a matter of minutes. It’s an online business card. People will look it up to see what services you offer and see who you are. Build a Yelp account, and put your website link there. Ask good customers to provide you good reviews. You can also do this on google. Make sure that if you put a logo on your truck that it matches the logo on your website. You want users to find you and know that it is the right person they are looking at. Do that on your business cards as well. They should be the same everywhere you use your company name. This is going to be some of the best low-cost marketing you can do.
